The tactical co-op shooter, which can be played solo or with two other players, essentially functions as a fully-fledged edition of the Rainbow Six Siege Outbreak mode, which briefly blessed Siege as a limited-time event a few years ago. However, as per the gameplay released during the E3 presentation, Extraction is set to be a vast expansion on that premise.
Showing off the mechanics at play, as well as the varied enemy types, the trailer confirms that Extraction blends tactical stealth-based shooting with a high-tension sci-fi setting. With familiar operators filling up three-person squads, operator abilities already look to keep gameplay as fresh and interesting as in Siege. And that doesn’t take into account the differently skilled Archæan, which range from common Grunts to slime traveling Tormentors.
A cinematic accompanied the gameplay deep-dive, seen below, detailing the overall story premise of Extraction. With what seems to be an asteroid-based alien invasion, the Archæan have taken over various locations across the world and your special REACT unit (spearheaded by operator Ash) is tasked with saving one of your own that has been captured.
According to a blog posted to the Ubisoft website after the event, Rainbow Six Extraction will have 18 operators to choose from; as of this writing, Ubisoft has revealed Finka, Pulse, Doc, Sledge, Alibi, Hibana, Ela, and Lion. There will also be 12 maps that feature “procedurally generated challenges.” Operators can also be “lost” during missions, forcing players to mount rescue missions to get the operators back in action.
Extraction will launch on September 16 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Google Stadia. It will feature cross play and cross save at launch. Stay tuned for more.
